These are the photos I have of Sophia and John George Barthell's children.
The photos are labeled with handwriting in my family's album. The first file (HattieBarthell.jpg) says "Hattie Barthell." This photo was taken in New York.
The second file (HattieBarthell2.jpg) says "Hattie Barthell, Howard's sister." This photo was taken in Decorah.
The third file (HattieHowardBarthell.jpg) says "Hattie and Howard Barthell." This photo was taken in Decorah.
I think John George Barthell and wife Sophia moved from New York to Iowa.
On the 1900 Decorah census John G. Barthell (age 78), wife Sophia (age 67), Hattie (age 23), and Howard (age 29) are living together.
On the 1910 Decorah census John Barthell (age 89), wife Sophia (age 76), and daughter Harriett (age 40) are living together.
The previous household listing is for Howard Barthell (age 41) and wife Matilda (age 36).
Matilda (age 43) and Howard Barthell (age 50) also show up in the 1920 Decorah census.
The photos suggest there are only two children of John George and Sophia Barthell and that Howard is the younger child. The Decorah census indicate there might be three children: Harriett, Howard, and Hattie. If Harriett were the real name and Hattie a nickname this would help explain how they could be the same person. I don't know what to do with the variance in Hattie's/Harriett's age except to dismiss it.
This is the only information I have on John George Barthell's branch of the family. Is there New York census data for John George and Sophia? I wonder if John George and Sophia are buried in Decorah.
